Art and Design
At Hawthorn Community Primary School, we place great value on Art and Design and the opportunities it provides for our children to be creative and express themselves.
We aim to instil a love of art in our children, and we are committed to providing a rich and exciting curriculum which enables them to develop the knowledge and skills needed to believe in themselves as artists.
Throughout their time at Hawthorn, our children will gain a good understanding of the visual elements of art (colour, form, line, shape, space, texture and value) and will be given opportunities to explore a wide range of media and techniques. They will also learn about a range of artists from different cultures and time periods which reflect the diverse nature of the world that we live in today.
As children progress through the school, the art curriculum allows them to build upon prior knowledge and skills, giving them the confidence and opportunities to apply them to a new context. By the end of Year 6, we aim for our children to have developed their skills of communication and critical thinking in art and be able to confidently express themselves as creative young citizens of the future.
In order to achieve our high expectations for Art and Design, we teach from a published scheme called 'Kapow.'
